[ note ]
So you want to publish a book. Maybe you have been thinking about it for a while, maybe the idea hit you yesterday, maybe someone told you it is complicated and expensive and you need a publisher — and you are here to find out if that is actually true.
It is not. I published my second book at 19, spent almost nothing, and had physical copies in my hand within two weeks of finishing the manuscript. This is everything I learned, in the order you actually need it.
STEP_01
Write the thing first
Before Google Docs, formatting, ISBNs or cover design — you need a manuscript. Just a document with your content in it. Formatting comes later and it is easier than you think.
When you are done writing, save a copy and come back here. Everything from this point is about turning that document into a real book.

STEP_02
Setting up your Google Doc
This is the step most people get wrong. They write the entire book in a default A4 document and then wonder why everything looks broken after upload. The fix: set your page size to your actual book size before formatting anything. File → Page Setup → Custom.
- PAGE SIZE
- Custom
- WIDTH
- 5.5 inches
- HEIGHT
- 8.5 inches
- MARGIN TOP
- 0.75 inches
- MARGIN BOTTOM
- 0.75 inches
- MARGIN LEFT
- 0.875 inches
- MARGIN RIGHT
- 0.625 inches
The left margin is wider than the right because the inner edge disappears into the spine when the book is bound. Click OK, then Set as Default so it stays consistent across every page.
BOOK SIZE GUIDE
- > 5.5 x 8.5 Non-fiction, guides, handbooks — RECOMMENDED
- > 6 x 9 Technical books, workbooks with tables
- > 5 x 7 Pocket books, poetry, short reads
- > A4 / A5 DO NOT USE — paper sizes not book sizes
[ warn ]
I went with 5.5 x 8.5. It felt like a real published book in hand, the spine had enough width to carry the title, and the page had room to breathe without looking sparse.
- BODY FONT
- Georgia or Times New Roman
- FONT SIZE
- 11pt or 12pt
- LINE SPACING
- 1.15 or 1.2
- PARAGRAPH
- First line indent 0.3 in, no gap between
- CHAPTER HEAD
- 20pt to 22pt bold
- PAGE NUMBERS
- Bottom center, 9pt, not on chapter openings
FRONT MATTER ORDER
- > Half title page — title only, centered
- > Blank page — the back of the half title
- > Full title page — title, subtitle, author, publisher
- > Copyright page — year, name, ISBN, edition, contact
- > Epigraph — optional, one to three quotes
- > Dedication — short, personal, centered
- > Table of contents — chapters with page numbers
- > A note to the reader — optional, good for non-fiction

STEP_03
Designing your cover
- > Built into Pothi when you create the book
- > Templates you customise with colours, fonts, images
- > Not premium looking, but genuinely free and fast
- > Best if you want the book out without design work
- > Free account, Custom Size canvas
- > Full wraparound: front cover + spine + back cover
- > Or design front and back separately — Pothi accepts both
- > Spine width = pages x 0.0025 inches (263 pages ≈ 0.66 in)
- > Generate the background visual in Midjourney / Ideogram / Firefly
- > Bring the image into Canva
- > Type the title and author name as real text, never as image
- > AI text on covers gets letters, spacing and kerning wrong
$ FULL WRAPAROUND WIDTH: 11.9 inches$ HEIGHT: 8.75 inches$ SPINE: pages × 0.0025 inches$ BLEED: 0.125 inches all outer edges$ EXPORT: PDF Print — not PNG, not Standard PDF

STEP_05
Free ISBN from Government of India
The ISBN is the 13-digit number on the back of every published book — it makes your title searchable in libraries, databases and retail systems. In India it is free from the Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency under the Ministry of Education.

STEP_06
Amazon and Flipkart distribution
Once your book is live on Pothi, opt in under Distribution / Channel Partners. Pothi lists and fulfils on both platforms. Prices there run slightly higher because of platform margins — you do nothing on Amazon or Flipkart directly.
- POTHI LISTING
- Live immediately after approval
- AMAZON LISTING
- 1 to 3 weeks after Pothi approval
- FLIPKART LISTING
- 1 to 3 weeks after Pothi approval
- ACTION REQUIRED
- None — Pothi handles fulfillment
STEP_07
After it is published
Physical copies in people's hands create word of mouth that no digital post replicates. Reviews are the single biggest driver of organic sales once launch momentum fades. And most HODs are genuinely supportive — the worst they say is not right now.

ONE LAST THING
Publishing feels like a much bigger deal before you do it than it is once you are on the other side. The process is straightforward once you know the steps. The hard part is writing something worth publishing and seeing it through.
Set up the doc at the right size today. Design a rough cover this weekend. Upload next week. It compounds quickly once you start moving. Go make it happen.
